Topics getting the most attention in Currituck County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Medication Lock Boxes for Families
Social Services wants the board to fund medication lock boxes for clients with children. The idea is to keep prescription drugs safely stored and out of kids' reach, reducing accidental exposure and misuse.
Sponsorship of Residents for Changing Tides Treatment
The board will consider spending opioid funds to sponsor one or two Currituck residents seeking treatment at Changing Tides. It's a question of how far county opioid settlement money goes toward direct treatment access.
Mainland Water Plant expansion delivery method
The board approved an easement tied to the Barco Boost Station, requested by staff.
Sand excavation in residential district (PB 26-13)
The county has 14 active mines. Commissioners tightened the approval process — conditional zoning in agricultural areas with new buffering — and allowed limited mining in remote single-family zones only for public road projects.
Blue Fin Marine property acquisition negotiations
Behind closed doors, commissioners were set to discuss negotiating to buy property from Blue Fin Marine, Inc. for a public purpose, plus the county's position on its own land at 1401 Ocean Pearl Road in Corolla.
Firearms ordinance amendment
The board considered changing Section 10-135 of the county code, which deals with firearms. The published agenda did not detail the substance of the change.
Opposition to SNAP cost-sharing provisions
Federal changes under H.R.1 carry new county costs and work for administering SNAP food assistance. DSS Director Samantha Hord briefed the board on what it means for the county budget and local families.
Beach Management and Access
Five years of monitoring show erosion vulnerabilities along Currituck's oceanfront over the next 10-30 years. The draft plan covers nourishment, armoring, dune management, and offshore sand sources — decisions on next steps are pending from commissioners.
Stormwater
Stormwater review has improved since the county began using outside engineering firms. Commissioners discussed pond sizing and soil suitability but made no changes to the process.
October 2026 budget amendments
The board was scheduled to act on budget amendments adjusting district spending. These affect how money flows to schools and programs.
Senior center programming and events
A full slate of activities — sock hop, tea party, Octoberfest, health and wellness day, trips and holiday events — was on the agenda for the county's senior centers.
15-passenger Bus for Senior Transportation
The board was scheduled to discuss a 15-passenger bus, which affects how seniors get to programs and trips.
Potential Corolla land acquisition
The board met privately to discuss negotiating the purchase of about 43 acres on Ocean Pearl Road in Corolla for a public purpose. No decision was announced.
Tulls Creek Elementary School Athletic Fields
Lights, backstops, and infields are now installed at Tulls Creek Elementary, opening new youth ballfields in Spring 2027.
Upcoming Park Projects: Walnut Island, Knotts Island, and Tennis Courts
Three more upgrades are queued: Walnut Island playground replacement starting October 22, Knotts Island Ruritan Park restroom renovation this winter, and Currituck High tennis court resurfacing with three USTA grants covering roughly half the cost.
Corolla and Carova Youth Programming
Parents on the northern beaches want their school-aged kids included in youth recreation programs, and staff met with them in Corolla to gather ideas. Programs could expand to reach these communities.
Currituck Community Park Phase III bid removed
Two new 250-foot fields replace a collegiate field concept, nearly doubling tournament capacity by spring 2028. The park already generates about $1.26 million a year in economic impact and could support future hotel development.
K&S Mine North Special Use Permit (PB 26-11)
Jennings Smith has applied to excavate 11.8 acres of sand and topsoil on about 221 acres in Poplar Branch. A deferral request was on the agenda, so neighbors would have to wait to learn the project's fate.
Ferry Toll Rates
After a state DOT listening session on Knotts Island, commissioners noted the board has adopted a resolution opposing ferry tolls for coastal residents.
FBLA leadership conference trip to Washington DC
Students from Currituck County High and JP Knapp will attend the FBLA Fall Leadership Conference in Washington DC, November 4-7, traveling by Amtrak.
Lost hands-on instruction in automotive program
An industry advisor and a program graduate told the board the auto program needs modern diagnostic tools like Snap-on pass-through devices so graduates stay employable. The advisor has a donated flood vehicle earmarked for the school and says his group will pay for the tools.
Parent organization and booster club oversight
After recent inquiries about PTO and booster activity, the district is adding annual finance training, a guidance webpage, and year-end financial records checks to make sure volunteer groups that raise big money (one booster raised over $100K) stay transparent.
Library services and quarterly performance
County libraries saw more circulation, programming and outreach this quarter, and branches reorganized space — including a bigger children's area at Moyock. This shapes what services residents get from their local branches.
County Library Ordinance and trustee by-laws
The new advisory board is organizing itself under the county's library ordinance adopted in August 2026. It must draft by-laws that the County Commissioners will have to adopt — the framework that governs how library trustees operate.
County-sponsored sand excavation in the off-road area
The county wants to be able to dig sand in the remote 4x4 area for its own projects, mainly road maintenance. The rules include well and groundwater protections and site reclamation, and could also create ponds useful for firefighting and wild horses.
State limits on county property tax authority
Voters will decide a sales tax referendum, a change to how commissioners are elected, and partisan school board races. A state constitutional amendment capping property taxes could squeeze county budgets and shift costs to local government.
Volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention crisis
Volunteer rosters have fallen more than 40% in ten years while Currituck's population and call volume keep growing. The Board may create a county Fire Marshal position — and losing volunteer service could hit taxpayers.
Kratom sales regulation
Chairman O'Neal warned that Kratom — legal but addictive and unregulated — is sold in local stores and worries him because kids may use it. He wants staff to research a Dare County-style ban by ordinance.
